A DAD-TO-BE attacked his friend with a knife after getting ‘extraordinarily intoxicated’ while celebrating the news his partner was expecting a baby.

Kenneth Mann inflicted such severe injuries to the hands of Daniel Kidd that he need a partial amputation of one of his fingers, Bolton Crown Court heard.

The pair had spent an evening toasting the news that Mr Mann had a child on the way at the Hare and Hounds pub, in Kearsley.

The pair then headed heading back to Mr Mann’s home in Charles Street, Farnworth in what Judge Timothy Stead called ‘a spirit of celebration’.

Here, the pair continued drinking and began taking cocaine.

But things took a sudden violent turn when Mr Mann attacked his friend with a knife.

At an earlier hearing prosecutor Duncan Wilcock said Mr Kidd had been the victim of an unprovoked attack, and had sustained his injuries while protecting himself when Mr Mann brought a knife or machete down on his head.”

But Andrew Scott, defending said Mr Mann perceived a threat - possibly due to intoxication, from Mr Kidd, who he said had picked up a knife.

In absence of expert evidence proving the prosecution case, Judge Timothy Stead, said he was basing his sentence on the defence case.

Handing down a 16-month suspended prison sentence for grievous bodily harm, Judge Stead said: “What you did is get yourself extraordinarily intoxicated on alcohol and Class A drugs.Unfortunately Mr Kidd has been very seriously affected by what happened, not only physically but psychologically.”
