AN 81-year-old woman was robbed while she was shopping in Farnworth.

The victim was pushing a shopping trolley in a car park in Blackhorse Street on March 27 when a man approached her, reached into the trolley and stole her purse and keys.

After taking the items, the man looked at the woman and said "thank you" before running off.

A member of the public on a bicycle chased the robber but he got away.

A spokesman from Greater Manchester Police said officers were called to Topphome Court in Blackhorse Street at about 3.15pm that day.

PC Cath Kerr from GMP’s Bolton borough said: "We are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed this unbelievably brazen theft, which has left this lady terrified and shaken.

"The man in question saw a vulnerable lady and took advantage, and was quite happy in doing so. He even went as far as saying 'thank you' to the lady as he stole her purse.

"This was the middle of the afternoon so I’m hopeful that there were witnesses who may have seen the man who may know who he is. I am also keen to hear from those members of the public who helped the lady."

The man is described as in his 30s of slim build and was clean shaven. He was wearing a black hat and a dark coloured short jacket.

The purse is black with a leather key holder and contained a "considerable amount" of money.
