A MAN has been arrested after a shop assistant was stabbed at a raid at a corner shop  this morning.

The son of the owner of Fernhill Convenience Store in Wigan Road, Deane was attacked by a man with a knife, the shopkeeper confirmed.

He said his son put up his hand to try to fend off the attacker and was stabbed by the raider.

The robber took cash from the still before he escaped.

The injured shop assistant was taken to hospital.

Police said a 32-year-old man was stopped a short time later and arrested on suspicion of robbery.

A spokesman said: "Police were called shortly after 12.20pm to reports of an armed robbery at a convenience store on Wigan Road, Deane. Officers attending found that a man had entered the store carrying a knife and made threats to a staff member. During a struggle with the offender, the shopkeeper sustained injuries to his hand. The offender fled the scene in a vehicle."

He said the arrested man remains in custody for questioning.
