MYSTERY surrounds the death of a dog found dumped in a ditch, wrapped in plastic.
The gruesome discovery was made by Shirley Kelly, who was walking with her two-year-old son, Timothy, in Crowthorn Road, Edgworth.
The dog, believed to be a Staffordshire bull terrier, was dumped in a small brook, about a foot deep.
Mrs Kelly said: "It was really horrible. I don't think there's any excuse for doing something like that. It really upset me."
She reported it to Blackburn with Darwen Council last Tuesday.
Cllr Mohammed Khan, executive member for housing and neighbourhoods services, said: "The council acted within two hours of receiving this complaint by wrapping the dog securely and removing it for disposal, as is our policy.
"Due to the decomposed state of the animal, it was impossible to determine the breed or how and when it died. The dog did not have a collar or identity tag so it was not possible to contact the owners. In cases such as this it is not council policy to contact the police or RSPCA."
A report released this week said that thieves may be specifically targeting Staffordshire bull terriers, with the breed making up 56 per cent of dogs stolen.
