FORMER land girls are being invited to a special reception in the mayor’s parlour.
Bolton’s first citizen, Cllr Anthony Connell, wants to give personal thanks to veterans of the Woman’s Land Army for their contribution to the Second World War effort.
The reception will be held in September and will also be attended by the mayoress, Cllr Connell’s wife, Maureen.
Cllr Connell said: “The work the land girls did was phenomenal and the country could not have managed without them."
Last month, former land girls received a medal of honour in formal recognition of their work.
Among them was Iris Clark, aged 79, who lives at St Catherine’s Care Home in Horwich, who was presented with her medal by home manager, Karen Waddington.
Mrs Clark was just 17 when she was sent from her home in Farnworth to Leavenheath near Colchester to work in the Women’s Land Army.
