Firefighter spat at as he tackles blaze

7:40pm Wednesday 27th August 2008

A THUG spat in the face of a firefighter while he and his colleagues were tackling a blazing car.

Police are investigating after a crew from Farnworth fire station were threatened by a motorist as they tried to put out a car fire.

The officers were called out to Bolton Road, Farnworth, at around 11.50pm on Tuesday.

The car was at the back of a house and the crew had to stop traffic while they manoeuvred the fire engine to the back street.

As they did this, a car containing four men stopped and the men inside began shouting abuse at the firefighters.

One of the men then got out of the car, approached a fire officer and began challenging him to a fight, shouting abuse.

He then spat in the firefighter’s face.

The thug only left when fire officers told him the fire engine had CCTV and the whole incident was being filmed.

Police are now examining the CCTV footage in a bid to trace the attacker.

Anyone with information can call police on 0161 872 5050 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
