THERE is a new headteacher at the helm of Smithills School.
Chris Roberts, the school’s former deputy head, took up the position this week and vowed to build on the successes of his predecessor, Ken Roberts, who has retired.
Mr Roberts has been at the Dean Road school for 19 years after being appointed deputy headteacher.
A maths teacher, he said: “Smithills School excels in so many ways. The school’s GCSE results of 63 per cent passes at grades A* to C are its best ever and represent the fifth year of continuous improvement. This success builds on a tremendous year in which the school has achieved The Bolton and Bury Business Award for Enterprise in Education, and national and international successes in music. Our task now is to improve even further.”
After teaching in schools in Rochdale, Oldham and Tameside, he joined Smithills in 1989.
He has travelled widely, providing professional training to teachers in Finland, Russia, Italy and the Basque country.
He has also continued to study and gained a MBA in Educational Management from Leeds Metropolitan University in 1996.
