YOUNG Joshua Glicklich fought off competition from thousands of Bolton children to come up with the perfect school dinner.
The would-be chef beat other young cooks to win Bolton Council’s dream school meal competition.
Now pupils across the town will get to enjoy Joshua’s creation.
More than 20,000 children were invited to suggest the ingredients which would be used to cook up a tasty dish to be put on the school dinners menu in the new academic year.
Entrants were encouraged to visit Bolton Market, in Ashburner Street, to browse through the wealth of healthy, fresh, local produce for inspiration in picking ingredients.
Joshua, aged eight, who attends St Peter and St Paul’s RC Primary School, in Pilkington Street, Bolton, put forward his favourite ingredients which were cod, pasta, tartare sauce, avocado, carrots, sweet corn and low fat yoghurt.
School meals chef Philip Ogden cooked up a dish of baked cod with cheese and herb crust served with avocado and pasta salad, with yoghurt topped muffins which was served up to pupils Joshua said: “My recipe was made up of my favourite foods. The chef did a good job and made a nice dish for us. My friends enjoyed it.”
Schoolmates Marta Markiewicz, Mijay Patel and Jack Haslam all gave the meal their approval.
Joshua won £20 and a certificate for his mouth-watering suggestion.
Cllr Ismail Ibrahim, executive member for environmental services, said: “It was a close call — the children came up with lots of ideas but Joshua’s entry really stood out.
“When the dish goes on the menu in September, we’ll be using sustainable cod caught from approved fisheries and approved by the Marine Stewardship Council.”
