BOLTON schoolchildren are to get the chance to study early for a job with the emergency services.
Local youngsters are among the first in the country to study for a diploma in public services, which will be available to pupils in the new academic year.
The new qualification is designed to give children an insight into the kind of jobs that fall under the bracket of public services, including police dog handlers or fire officers.
But the qualification will also give youngsters the chance to become the museum administrators or housing officers of tomorrow.
Cllr Ebrahim Adia, Executive member for children’s services, said: “We’re delighted that Bolton will shortly be able to offer this exciting new qualification to young people.
“It will prepare them excellently for their future careers and we’re pleased to be pioneering delivery for the diploma.”
Bolton was one of the first authorities to pilot the new diploma qualification in 2008.
The courses are designed to bridge the gap between academic and vocational studies.
Diploma courses already available include: society, health and development; construction and the built environment; engineering; creative and media studies; information technology; hair and beauty; hospitality; and business, administration and finance.
