A LOVING couple will take a romantic trip down memory lane by returning to their honeymoon spot 50 years after they got married.
After celebrating their golden wedding anniversary, Vernon and Margaret Dobbs are to embark on a second honeymoon in Morecambe.
The couple of, Snydale Close, Westhoughton, marked the occasion with a party for family and friends at Westhoughton Conservative Club, where their wedding reception took place in 1960.
Margaret, who is aged 71 and a grandmother of three, said: “It will be lovely to go back to the coast again though I should imagine it has changed in the last 50 years.
“Back then we stayed in the hotel drinking frothy coffee and listening to pop songs on the jukebox and we had lots of fun.
“Nowadays there are more friendly pubs and lots more things going on — we will still be looking forward to the fish and chips though!”
The pair met through friends when Margaret was aged 16 and Vernon was aged 15 and were together for five years before they got engaged.
Their wedding took place at Westhoughton Congregational Church, which is now Westhoughton United Reformed Church.
Vernon and Margaret have two children — Paul, aged 40 and Jacqueline, aged 38 and three grandchildren — Katie, aged 13, Emma, aged 10 and Poppy, aged four.
They are both retired. Vernon was a joiner and Margaret was a cotton weaver and later a childminder.
Margaret added: “We are a normal couple and I think we have stuck together because we have kept so active, even in retirement.
“We are looking forward to the trip to Morecambe and to going on holiday to Greece in June too. It is a good way to celebrate.”
