A GARAGE boss is making his running debut in a marathon after reports in The Bolton News inspired him to help the Marie Curie Nurses Appeal.
Glynne Lever, who went on his first run six months ago, will soon be undertaking his marathon effort in a bid to raise more than £5,000 for the year-long campaign.
Marie Curie Cancer Care, with the support of The Bolton News, aims to raise £200,000 in Bolton by the end of June to fund home nursing care for local terminally ill people.
Father-of-two Mr Lever, aged 36, of Westhoughton, will take on the Paris marathon on April 11. He said: “I had not done any running until I agreed to do this — I must be mad!
“I have always wanted to do a marathon and when I saw in The Bolton News about the Marie Curie campaign I thought I would go for it.
“I am glad to be helping a local cause and I think it is brilliant what the nurses do.
“The training is going well so I am confident, although apprehensive.”
Mr Lever, who is a partner at Whitecroft Garage, in Heaton, has been training with the help of customer and personal trainer Tony Carter.
Mr Lever will travel to the French capital with his wife, Adele, before completing the route through the city.
He is funding the trip himself, with all sponsorship going to the appeal, and has already raised £4,000.
Hannah Taylor, community fundraiser for Marie Curie, said: “Weare thrilled that Glynne has decided to take on the challenge of a lifetime, completing a marathon, for Marie Curie Cancer Care’s Bolton Nursing Appeal.
“Huge thanks to Glynne for raising such a fantastic amount and thanks to all his customers and suppliers who have supported his fundraising.
“We wish him the best of luck and will be thinking of him.”
