Two jailed for setting fire to cars

Two men have been jailed for causing more than £50,000 worth of damage by setting fire to cars in Bolton.

Zak Alldread, aged 18, of Lennox Gardens and Paul Lunn, aged 26, of Sundridge Close, both pleaded guilty to 10 counts of arson (recklessly endangering life) and requested a further seven counts to be taken into consideration at an earlier hearing.

They were responsible for setting fire to a total of 17 vehicles.

Today, Thursday 29 July 2010 at Bolton Crown Court Lunn was jailed for four and a half years and Alldread was jailed for three years and eight months.

A total of ten cars were set on fire on two separate dates. In each case a fire lighter had been placed in the front grill and set alight.

Between 1.44am and 2.19am on Thursday 14 January 2010 a grey Lexus and a red Toyata estate parked on driveways on Everbrom Road, Bolton were set on fire.

A third car, a blue Honda Accord parked on a driveway on Gleneagles was also torched.

On Wednesday 20 January 2010 between 1.45am and 2.30am a further seven cars were set alight.

A white Vauxhall Combo and a red Rover belonging to the same person, parked at the rear of St Helen's Road, Bolton.

Two more cars parked at the rear of St Helen's Road, a silver Vauxhall Corsa and a blue Vauxhall Corsa were also targeted.

A green Ford Focus on Muirfield Close, a silver Vauxhall Vectra on Turnberry Road and a grey Toyota Hiace on Newstead Drive were also set alight.

A further 7 offences taken into consideration refer back to July last year compounding the extent of their activity.

Alldread and Lunn were arrested later on Wednesday 20 January 2010 and firelighters were found at Lunn's address.

Detective Constable Stuart Round of Bolton CID said: "It is not possible to comprehend the stupidity of their actions.

"A lot of the cars were parked on driveways close to houses and it can only be luck the fire did not spread and cause serious injury or even kill someone.

"The damage they caused was more than £50,000 yet neither could offer an explanation as to why they did it.

"Innocent lives could have been lost while the fire brigade was distracted dealing with this mindless vandalism.

"This was not a one off incident in a moment of madness but took place over several different dates. Thankfully they have finally admitted their reckless behaviour and it is right they have been brought to justice for what they have done."
