KAREN Edwards and Emma Bethell-Clarke had some of the best seats in the house at the Olympic Games opening ceremony — after they were invited by the Prime Minister.
Chief executive of Bolton Lads and Girls Club, Mrs Edwards, and volunteer Emma, aged 17, attended the extravaganza after a surprise phone call from Downing Street.
Emma, from Bury, said: “When my dad told me the news I didn’t register it as I couldn’t quite believe it. It’s privilege to be invited to one of the biggest events in UK history.”
The Holy Cross College pupil was chosen to attend the ceremony by David Cameron after giving a presentation in front of 150 people at Number 10 earlier this year.
Emma spoke about her experiences at Bolton Lads and Girls and her participation in last year’s National Citizen Service.
Mrs Edwards was invited in recognition of the club’s contribution to youth provision.
She said: “The call came totally out of the blue, it was very surprising.
“It was almost surreal to be part of such an historic event, mixing with Heads of State and Olympic officials from all over the world.
“George Osbourne and Boris Johnson hosted the pre-Opening Ceremony reception and made us feel very welcome. Boris was very funny.
“The ceremony itself was spectacular — our seats were amazing and I was so proud to be British, the atmosphere was electric.
“I’m looking forward to seeing Team GB win more medals.”
