Showers plan for station to encourage cyclists

SHOWERS could be built at the new £50 million transport interchange in a bid to encourage more people to bike into Bolton.

Transport bosses hope the facilities will encourage more commuters to use pedal power instead of their cars — especially those inspired by the success of British cyclists such as Jason Kenny at the Olympics.

A cycle hub is already planned for the transport interchange in New Street, Bolton town centre, but now Transport for Greater Manchester chiefs have announced this will also include showers, changing cubicles, covered and secure parking for bikes, lockers and toilets.

Cllr David Chadwick, who represents Bolton on the TfGM committee, said discussions had taken place about making the hub a stand-alone building rather than it being part of the Interchange itself, but said proposals were still in the early stages.

He added: “People could ride into Bolton, get a shower, put their bike in a locker and then get on the train.

“Thanks to the Olympics and the feats of Jason Kenny I see more and more people on their bikes around Bolton, which is great to see because it’s good exercise.”

The hub is due to open by spring 2015 and is being funded by the £50 million Local Sustainable Transport Fund programme.

People who want to use the facilities would have to become a member of the scheme and would gain access with a swipe card.

The exact details of how many bikes could be stored are still being finalised, but in a separate project, Northern Rail is also planning to install new cycle storage facilities on each of its platforms.

The move has been welcomed by commuters, cycling clubs and health chiefs.

Stephen Smith, aged 45, of The Haulgh , said: “I think showers are a good idea. Where I worked they had them in the office building, but going on the train if you’re scruffy isn’t nice.”

Ray Ducker, aged 53, of Farnworth, has been cycling for 30 years.

He said: “The showers are a good idea. I ride to Great Lever, which is two miles from mine, but if I worked in Bolton I’d use that facility, “I think the Olympics has made people more involved with sport.

Jason Kenny lives near me.” Brendan Nawrocki, aged 34, of Hall i'th'

Wood, said: “It’s a good idea, especially as you could leave your bike.

“I only live two miles out of town and it can take half an hour to get into town in the car because of the traffic.”

Andrew Richardson, secretary of Bolton Hot Wheels cycle club, said: “If this new facility is done well I'm sure it would be a major benefit to the town.”

Lesley Jones, Bolton’s deputy director of public health, said: “Commuting by bike can help you achieve this level of physical activity by making it a regular part of your daily routine.

“If you are unable to perform vigorous exercise, cycling is a great option because it can be done at the speed and level you feel comfortable with.”

The Local Sustainable Transport Fund programme is investing in new cycling schemes, routes and facilities across Greater Manchester to make the bike a “realistic and attractive”

way of getting to work for thousands more people.

What are needed at Bolton train station are cashpoints and litter bins.Every other main train station has cashpoints so why not Bolton? Walking to Sainsbury's and back across a busy road is ridiculous to get to the nearest ones.

Also on the subject of priorities, how about trains that stop at Moses Gate and Farnworth in the evenings and on Sundays please? Currently they stop at 6.45pm and we have no trains on Sunday at all yet you can afford to spend money on shower cubicles.People wouldn't need to cycle if they had adequate train services at their nearest small stations.

I think the vast majority of serious rail users in Bolton would prefer to have an Advance Purchase ticket machine installed than a shower. Much cheaper, and more use would be made of it.

I am still amazed after the 4 million pound revamp or whatever they spent, we dont have an advance ticket machine or cash points. Id understand a bit more if the station had a footfall of twenty odd people each train (some very odd!) but each time I leave the train at Bolton over a HUNDRED get off that train.

No doubt the toilet vandals cant wait for the new showers either

The revamp has hardly improved anything at the station. The shop in the foyer has gone where you could buy food and newspapers and the pre booking and enquiries office has gone as well. The only improvements I see is a longer canopy and wider ticket offices. Also why is it I can travel to many far flung places cheaper from Manchester Piccadilly than from Bolton? Very few routes offer cheap advance fares from Bolton yet they do from Piccadilly but 5 years ago you could get many cheap advance fares from Bolton.

Ridiculous. Wasn't there a post a few weeks ago about the toilets getting constantly vandalized?

Secondly, to justify building showers, you attract more cyclists. To attract more cyclists, you probably need more secure bike locking facilities. I've not visited the station for a while (no surprise there), but I'm sure there's no decent place to store a bike.

This should be wayyyy down the priorities list. Does Picadilly even have showers? Like a poster above said, a cash machine, litter bins and an advance ticket machine would be a more sound investment.

I wondered how far down the list I had to be before I got to a comment like this - myself and my husband both in our 40s are keen cyclists, there are also 3 cars in our household on which we pay road tax and have done so for a considerable number of years - we also have insurance thru our membership of British Cycling - the attitude of some people towards people who love a very popular sport with great health and environmental benefits drives me mad - the last time you probably used a bike was when it had 3 wheels - until cycling is more accessible for everyday living and we are better catered for the roads will remain shockingly busy and attitudes of both non cycling drivers and even pedestrians will never change.

Actually, I use my pedal cycle through country parks and down canal towpaths, so yes I do use ‘bikes’. What I do not do is expect to be provided free of charge lanes on public highways, showers in stations or at work etc just because I choose to ride a bike.
I think you will find that the bike community are the worlds worst for causing all the aggravation in these debates, especially those clowns with cycle cams who post ‘near misses’ on you tube showing them wobbling all over the road berating motorists like the half wit who cycles down the A666 from Bolton towards Manchester. This bright individual was that bothered about a car allegedly cutting him up he ran into the back of a stationary vehicle!
MOST cyclists do not have insurance, Google it if you don’t believe me and if it is your environmental or health kick fine but don’t ram it down everyone else’s throats.

Not being funny but as well as providing the shower facilities surely they will have to provide attendants to keep them clean? I'm not so sure I fancy showering in the same place some scrotes will undoubtedly be injecting themselves, playing with themselves, sleeping or just practising vandalism!

So no need for me to waste money on a "soap on a rope" then ?
Its a sad sign of the times, but as has been said before these facilities will just attract the low life of the town to pester the law abiding train users.
How many public toilets have been closed over the years because of scrotes and weirdos frequenting them ??.
A place where these devients can legaly remove all their clothes and (you will have to imagine the rest).
Crazy idea.
