A TAKEAWAY boss has been told he could face jail after hygiene inspectors found a catalogue of problems at his town centre restaurant.

The court heard that The Nile, in Bradshawgate, had two onion bhajis “deemed unfit for human consumption” on display, while inspectors also found mouldy meat being stored at the fast food joint.

Bolton Council inspectors had ordered staff at the takeaway to fix numerous other problems, but they had not done so, the court heard.

The list of complaints included an unclean floor, damaged shelves in a fridge and a freezer that did not shut properly.

Inspectors said staff had also failed to close a gap in the door between the toilet and the lobby and had not installed a door between the lobby and the rear kitchen during an inspection on April 5, 2011.

On December 24, 2010, council chiefs ordered the oven in the middle preparation room to be given a thorough clean, as well as the store room floor by January 17, 2011, but this was not done.

The court heard there had also been a failure to ensure employees who handled food were supervised and that they had also not carried out hazard analysis.

The cooked onion bhajis and “deteriorated” meat were found on October 14, 2011.

Nile manager Abid Patel, aged 28, of Belmont Road, pleaded guilty to 10 counts of failure to comply with the requirements of a hygiene improvement notice, while he denied a further count of the same charge, which was ordered to lie on file.

Sophie Cartwright, prosecuting, said: “Abid Patel could face up to two years imprisonment for the mould and deterioration of the meat as the manager of the takeaway and has pleaded guilty to those matters.”

Mr Patel appeared alongside employees Sajid Patel, aged 22, and Tahir Patel, aged 30, both of Belmont Road.

Sajid Patel pleaded guilty to seven counts of failure to comply with the requirements of a hygiene improvement notice, but denied a further four counts, which were ordered to lie on file.

Tahir Patel pleaded guilty to three counts of the same charge.

All three were granted unconditional bail until December 12, when they will be sentenced.

The owner of the Nile, which is still open for business, declined to comment on the case.
