Police close 'double death' investigation in Farnworth

A DOUBLE stabbing and house fire which left a Farnworth couple dead is no longer under police investigation.
Jean Rhodes, aged 64, was found dead in the burning house in Darley Avenue, Farnworth, shortly after 5.15pm on Friday, October 9.
Nigel Peter Simms, aged 52, was seen by neighbours and firefighters drenched in blood just inside the semi-detached house.
It is believed that he attacked his partner before turning the knife on himself and then setting the house on fire.
A police spokesman last night confirmed: “Nobody else is sought in connection with the incident, which police are no longer investigating. A file is being prepared and will be passed to the coroner in due course.”
Post-mortem examinations confirmed that multiple stab wounds were the cause of both deaths.
Inquests have been opened and adjourned at Bolton Coroner’s Court, but a date has yet to be set for them to be resumed.
Meanwhile, a Lithuanian couple who were also found dead in Farnworth have been named by police.
Murder squad detectives launched an investigation after a man was found hanged in the lounge of a house in Tig Fold Road and his partner was discovered dead in an upstairs bedroom at 10.40pm on Wednesday, November 11.
They have now been named following fingerprint checks and the discovery of a cousin in Blackburn.
The police spokesman said: “They have been identified as Daiva Kucinskiene, aged 42, and Osvaldas Serelis, aged 44. Both were Lithuanian.
“An investigation has been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.”
A Home Office post-mortem examination has revealed Osvaldas died of asphyxiation. Daiva’s cause of death was unascertained, and further tests will be carried out.
Greater Manchester Police Category C murder team is understood to be looking into the possibility that the man killed the woman before committing suicide.
