THE 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz was commemorated at Holocaust Memorial Day in Bolton yesterday.
The Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Norman Critchley, opened the town’s annual Holocaust Memorial Ceremony, which was this year called The Legacy of Hope.
The ceremony, in the Festival Hall at Bolton Town Hall, paid tribute to all communities affected by the Holocaust.
The Rev Phil Mason introduced readings by council leaders, representatives from Bolton’s faith groups, pupils from the Essa Academy and Rabbi Reuven Silverman.
Children from the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community in Bolton lit candles and viola player Carl Austin provided music.
The event was organised by the Bolton Interfaith Council in partnership with Bolton Council.
Chan Parmar of Bolton Interfaith Council said: “It was well attended. It is a very important day in the calendar for us to remember, especially this year. Today was about working together and spreading the message of peace and hope.
“It is very important that all communities come together so that tragedies like this never happen again.
“I am very grateful to everyone who came to support the event.”
