NEW plans to revive the fortunes of a greyhound racing track have been revealed.

The move comes just months after a planned £100,000 revamp of Westhougton Greyhound Stadium, in Wigan Road, was shelved.

Now businessman Kevin Brown, from St Helens, Merseyside, has applied for a betting and premises licence for the Westhoughton track.

Mr Brown proposes to sell alcohol, and have entertainment, from 11am until 1am each day, with late-night refreshments being served between 11pm and 1.30am.

His interest follows a number of failed attempts to revive the sport at the site.

Earlier this year the dreams of greyhound lover Jason Seddon, from Leigh, fell through when he was forced to abandon his plans to give the stadium a £100,000 revamp.

Mr Seddon had hoped the attraction would rival the Bell Vue racing track, in Manchester, and it underwent £30,000 improvements last year.

Ian Holden, of Dobb Brow, Westhoughton, who owns the track, has suggested turning it into housing in the past.

Cllr David Wilkinson, who represents Westhoughton South, said people have strong views on greyhound racing, and questioned whether it would take off after previous failed attempts.

He said: “Given the fact it has changed so many times, I can’t see it having a good future.

“We will just have to wait and see.”

But Cllr David Chadwick, who represents Westhoughton South, hopes the new enterprise is a success. He said: “It has got to be good for the community of Westhoughton.

“I just hope they are successful. If it is, there will be more jobs.”

The licence would be granted by Bolton Council if Mr Brown meets conditions. These include an inspection by a vet before, and between, each race, that a suitable room for the vet is provided, and that records are kept of greyhounds competing.
