FIREFIGHTERS went to the rescue as a young couple escaped from their flat unhurt after an electrical fire in Lever Edge.
An fuse box in the communal hallway burst into flames following a short circuit after the couple turned on their electrical storage heaters at the flat in Holmeswood Road.
Aras Dawd, aged 23, said he was in his flat with his girlfriend and two friends when the fire broke out at 12.25am yesterday. He phoned the fire rescue service.
“I was scared as I couldn’t see anything,”
said Mr Dawd. “When I opened the door, there was black smoke and fire, so I ran inside and phoned the fire brigade.
“We all ran outside and we were panicking but the fire brigade were here within 10 minutes.
We’re just glad everyone is okay.”
Three fire crews were called to tackle the fire.
A spokesman said: “Electrical faults can occur even in wellmaintained appliances and a working smoke alarm is the first line of defence.”
