A schoolgirl, aged 16, was grabbed off a street in Bolton and raped twice this morning.
Detectives are appealing for witnesses after the girl was subjected to the horrific sex attack at 9.30am.
As the girl, who was wearing her school uniform, walked through Halliwell, she sensed somebody was behind her.
Her attacker then grabbed her from behind and pushed her into some bushes at the bottom of Raglan Street and then raped her twice.
The offender, who is described as being a white man, ran off and the girl got help from a local resident.
Detective Inspector Paul Hitchen, of Bolton CID, said: "What has happened to this girl is appalling. She has been left extremely distressed and traumatised by her ordeal.
"I have a dedicated team of detectives who are working exclusively and tirelessly on this. It is vital this man is caught.
"I'd like to appeal to anyone who may be able to help us to contact us.
"Did you see a man running in this area just after 9.30am?
"You may think what you saw or heard was insignificant, but I'd ask you to call us, as it could be the key for us to solve this crime.
"I do not want to panic the community, because attacks like this thankfully do not happen very often but I'd urge people to be vigilant and it may be a good idea for schoolchildren to stick together when they are going to and from school."
Anyone with any information should call Bolton CID on 0161 856 5740 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
