A MAN has appeared in court charged in connection with the alleged rape of a schoolgirl.
Matthew Paul Jones, aged 23, of no fixed address, appeared before Bolton Magistrates this morning.
Jones, who spoke only to confirm his name and age, was arrested on Friday.
He has been charged with three counts of rape and one count of robbery.
No application was made for bail and Jones was remanded in custody until August 22 when he will appear at Bolton Crown Court to enter his pleas.
The charge relates to the alleged rape of a 16-year-old girl, on Tuesday morning at about 9.30am.
The teenager, who was wearing her school uniform, had walked through Astley Lane, Halliwell, and was making her way along a footpath in woodland at the bottom of nearby Raglan Street.
It is claimed she was approached by a man who subjected her to the terrifying sexual assault.
The girl's black and orange Sony Ericsson mobile phone was stolen, and she ran to a nearby house for help after the alleged attack.
Police warned all schoolgirls to walk in groups following the incident.
