CHILDREN took over control of their Bolton school — and rather than running amok the clever youngsters proved they were a class act.

Teachers at Pikes Lane Primary School found themselves replaced by bright young things who stood at the front of the class to take the lessons.

Parents had nothing to worry about as the takeover day was organised in a special lesson to help pupils develop their personal skills.

Each child had to prove her or she was right to take over the school, and had to apply for the many different positions.

The successful young candidates planned and led the lessons, while the new support staff team ensured the school day ran smoothly.

Victoria Robinson, deputy headteacher, said: “The takeover day was part of our life skills week.

“The children had to apply for the different positions in school and then spend a day in those roles.

“They gained valuable insight into what a working day is like and also how many people it takes to run an effective school.”

She added: “The teachers loved it too.

“They thought the children were fantastic in their roles and worked hard to meet all the criteria of our Learner Profile, including being risk takers, effective communicators, collaborative enquirers and reflective thinkers.”

Pupils said running a school and teaching was harder than they thought.

Ayesha Ahmed, in year six, said: “It was a challenging day. However it was really fun.

“You were able to experience what our teachers go through every day and it was hard work.

“After completing my planning, I felt much more confident to stand up in front of the younger children.

“I was definitely an effective communicator and took a massive risk.”
