YOUNG people with designs on success unveiled their ideas for Bolton’s new multi-million technical college.

Pupils stepped into the dragons’ den to present their ideas of what the soon to be developed University Technical College Bolton (UTC) could look like to a panel of judges — in a bid to win their school £10,000.

The University of Bolton recently won approval for the new multi-million pound centre to be built on its main campus and wants its architects and builders to incorporate the visions of young people into their designs.

The judges were led by the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Colin Shaw.

He said: “We are looking for originality and innovation from the presentations. They have done well to get this far, but we will be looking for something a little out of the ordinary to secure the main prize.”

Cllr Shaw was joined on the judging panel by the former High Sheriff of Manchester and architect, Christian Wewer; Bolton architect, Neil Pike; Architectural Technology Course Leader, Nooshin Akrami and Fine Art Senior Lecturer, Alan Buckingham.

Mr Wewer said: “We will welcome ideas and concepts such as sustainability and interesting use of space.”

The winners will be announced at a later date and the £10,000 prize will be awarded to the winning school at a special event.

Building work for the £10 million UTC Bolton will start this summer with completion due by July 2015.

The building will open in September 2015.
