YOUNG musicians staged their own version of the popular open air concert Proms in the Park — in their school playground.

St George’s CE Primary School’s grounds were transformed into a fabulous outdoor concert venue for the first Proms in the Playground, featuring the talented musicians at the Westhoughton school.

And music lovers flocked to enjoy the evening of entertainment.

They enjoyed a selection and contemporary music, with pieces including Summer Holiday and Fields of Gold. The audience brought their own picnics, blankets and camping chairs.

It is the first time the school has staged Proms in the Playground to take the music to the masses.

Music co-ordinator at the school, Sarah Raisbeck, said: “This was a spin-off Proms in the Park to give more parents a chance to come and hear their children perform. The children have only been rehearsing for a few weeks for the concert.

“They loved it, we had all the music groups in the school perform.”

Miss Raisbeck said the beauty of the Proms in the Playground meant more people had a chance to hear the musical talents of children than if it had been held in the school hall.

Deputy headteacher Philip Ivory said: “On a balmy summer evening a musical spectacular was performed by the children of St George’s sharing their musical talents with the whole school community.

“The children played woodwind and brass instruments, recorders and guitars. There was also a piano and a drum solo.

“The evening endedd with a rousing rendition of Auld Lang Syne — with the audience joining in to celebrate a wonderful evening.”
