YOUNGSTERS recreated famous 1980s arcade favourite Pac-Man to launch a new computer game project.

The project, by Bolton Playing for Success, is designed to tie in with new curriculum in which children have to learn about computer coding and programming.

It is working with three schools over the next three weeks, and it was Year Six children at St Peter’s CE Primary in Farnworth who brought the game to life.

Neil West, from Playing for Success, said: “I thought everyone knew about Pac-Man but not all of them had heard of it.

"So I showed them the game on-line, before they became the characters, with one on a walkie-talkie giving them instructions.

After turning Bolton Science and Technology Centre into a Pac-Man maze, the children used Makey Makey —which uses a USB cord to connect its circuit board to a computer — and programmed vegetables to play music and play games.

Isobel Clark, aged 10, said: “I have seen a picture of Pac-Man before but I didn’t know what it was about. I enjoyed playing the game.

Marcus Waite, aged 10, said: “I learned that you can use everyday objects to take the place of electricity. For example, we used a banana as an electrical conductor by inserting a circuit wire in to the banana.

"I had great fun and want a go again.”
