PUPILS at a Farnworth school have buried items in a time capsule — to be opened in 100 years' time.

Youngsters and teachers at The Ferns Primary school buried the special capsule in the wall of its new building, which is currently being constructed.

The container included photos of pupils and teachers, laminated copies of their school's magazine and The Bolton News, and a list of popular TV programmes and films from 2015.

It is expected to remain underground for up to 100 years.

Bolton South East MP Yasmin Qureshi visited the school to help bury the capsule.

Ms Qureshi said: "It was brilliant to see the enthusiasm of the children and the ambition the staff have for the school.

"This capsule is a great way of encapsulating history and who knows — in 100 years' time, some of these pupils could still be alive when the capsule is discovered.

"People who find this capsule will get a good feel for what The Ferns is like and what 2015 was like. I find this idea very intriguing and it's a great idea from The Ferns."

The unveiling event involved a question and answer session with Ms Qureshi, awards presentations and speeches from pupils and staff.

Kathie Brunsden, a Year Four teacher at The Ferns, was delighted with the children's approach and application in helping to put the capsule together.

Ms Brunsden said: "The pupils are very excited about what this capsule will mean to children in the future.

"This capsule really captures the imagination. Because we are building a new extension to the school, we thought adding a time capsule to it was a great opportunity. It's something we've always thought would be a good idea.

"Yasmin Qureshi really inspired the children — she was telling them what they had to do if they wanted to become an MP and she really engaged with them.

"It was a special day."
