A SCIENCE teacher who pioneered a mock hospital in his last job is set to head up Bolton's newest school.

University Technical College (UTC) Bolton will be led by David Goddard, currently vice-principal at Liverpool Life Sciences UTC.

Mr Goddard has been teaching since graduating from the University of Liverpool in 2000 with a first class joint honours degree and a teaching qualification.

He has taught science at GCSE and specialised in biology and chemistry at A-level.

Prior to taking up his post at Liverpool Life Sciences he held a number of secondary school leadership positions in Manchester and the North East.

At Liverpool Life Sciences, Mr Goddard developed a teaching programme that combined academic qualifications with learning specialist technical skills.

The UTC used a £90,000 patient simulator to recreate the busy working environment of a hospital ward. This helped prepare students for careers in medicine and health sciences.

Mr Goddard said: “I’m looking forward to working to build a school that is truly student centred and where we will focus on each child’s personal learning journey to help them achieve more than they thought possible, securing both university places and good jobs.”

Dr Zubair Hanslot, chief executive at UTC Bolton, said: “I am looking forward to David assisting me in operating a unique curriculum in health sciences and engineering technologies and in the development of the school.

"We will motivate and progress students by creating links between their academic qualifications and real life employer projects.”

UTC Bolton's chairman of governors Michael Dwan said: “David has had a significant impact at Liverpool Life Sciences in terms of recruitment, inspection and exam results and I expect him to make a similar significant contribution at UTC Bolton.”

UTC Bolton — sponsored by the University of Bolton — will specialise in health and engineering and will open in a new building on the university campus in September 2015.
