AMBITIOUS Bolton College apprentices have shown they have the drive to succeed.

A dozen motor vehicle apprentices showcased their skills in a competition as part of National Apprenticeship Week.

The paint refinishing team showed their preparing, priming and spraying skills and those from the body repair team had to weld, repair and prep a damaged panel.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton were watching on as the finished products were judged by tutors of each motor vehicle specialism as well as Roy Brookes — former head of motor vehicle at Bolton Technical College and Chairman of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club.

Mark Turner, Body Shop Manager at UK Assistance, who was also on the judging panel, said: “I was really surprised with the sheer quality produced by the apprentices. Those who won first and second place are already at industry standard — if it was up to me I’d employ them tomorrow.”

The week is organised to promote apprenticeships and the department currently has over 60 learners studying on apprenticeship programmes.

Nathan Mann, aged 19, who came first in the paint and refinishing category and is currently studying paint and refinishing Level 3, said: “My apprenticeship is allowing me to gain a nationally recognised qualification as well as crucial work experience.

"Once you’ve got a trade under your belt, so many doors are opened. I’m currently working for the family business — Cooper Car & Commercial Vehicle Painters — and one day I’d like to develop it into a successful chain.”

Peter Alstead, Head of Engineering and STEM — science, technology, engineering and maths — at Bolton College, added: “It has been an excellent day, with intense focus and commitment from all of the competitors — a wonderful way to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week and the perfect opportunity for our apprentices to demonstrate their skills.

"Bolton College is committed to getting young people into employment and apprenticeships are a tried and tested route to a successful career within the Engineering sector.”
