A SCHOOL isn't cooking with gas — but pupils needn't worry.

The gas supply to the kitchens of St Gregory's RC Primary School, Farnworth, has been cut off as new ovens are being fitted.

So pupils are having to go elsewhere to have their meals cooked — in fact just across the road to St John's CE Primary.

St Gregory's acting headteacher Caroline Grundy said: "We are working very closely with the local authority, Diocese and British Gas to get out kitchen up and running as soon as possible."

She added: "Particularly thanks must go to St John's Primary for sharing their facilities with us during this time."

Bolton School Meals Service is also providing food to the other children who would normally have a school meal

Headteacher Sally Magill said: "Schools in the cluster work really well together, we can pick up the phone anytime and ask anything of each other.

"We have had older children helping them and making them feel welcome and started the infants' meals five minutes earlier.

"The children are enjoying it."

Children say they are enjoying eating with each other..

Jacob Brookes, aged five, said: "It is really nice and exciting and I have made some new friends at the school."

St John's CE pupils say they are helping their lunchtime visitors feel at home.

Isabelle Nelson, aged seven, said: "We are a really friendly school, and it is nice showing them our school.

"We are helping to make them feel at home."

Samuel Scott, aged six, added: "We are making new friends."

Leonie Edwards of British Gas said: “When St Gregory’s contacted us about their gas supply, we moved as quickly as we could to help them.

"As soon as we were contacted, we immediately undertook a survey. As it’s such a big job it will take three days to complete and this needs to done in school holidays. We’ve confirmed to St Gregory’s that the work required will be done at half term.

"In the mean time, we will send some energy saving gadgets to the school.”
