For a pair of Star-Cross'd lovers will take to take to picturesque grounds of the church to stage a modern day version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Bolton College's performing arts students will star in an open air production alongside pupils from Mount St Joseph in Farnworth and Sharples School.

Theatre lovers will sit in the open to follow the the turbulent story of teenagers Robbie and Judama, as they struggle to be together in a world filled with suspicion and revenge in the production of Ian Kershaw's Star Cross'd.

The two-hour play replaces the romantic Italian setting of Verona with the town of Bolton.

Russell Lane, curriculum leader for performing arts at Bolton College, said: “The play has set the learners a challenge of mixing the original Shakespearian text with the language of today.

"Rehearsals are going really well.

"The cast are excited and a bit nervous about the performances as they’ve never been in a show quite like this one before."

The open-air play will be performed by 60 actors and dancers from the college’s performing arts department.

Francis Kirk, aged 20, who plays the role of Robbie, said: "I was terrified and ecstatic at the same time when we found out we would performing the play in the grounds of the church.

"The biggest concern was volume because inside it is easier to hear the actors."

Aminata Sow, aged 18, who plays Judama, said: "I love Romeo and Juliet — this is my first time performing Shakespeare.

"I would urge people to get tickets for the play because there is a twist at the end and it will be well worth watching.

"Performing outdoors will feel more natural because the scenery and setting is already here."

The actors say that although sunny weather would be perfect, cloud and even a little rain will add to the atmosphere of the performance.

Mr Kershaw, whose writing credits include Shamelesss, much to the students' delight.

The show takes place on June 17, 18 and 19.
