SHOPPERS who pop along to a special town centre art exhibition could walk away with a piece of art by Hollywood star Ian McKellen.

The Secret Postcard Sale — a pop-up exhibition next Saturday — features art by recognised artists alongside talented students.

Buyers could walk away with a bargain — but they will not know whether a student or a professional has created the design until they complete their purchase.

Bolton School art teacher Jen McCann said: "The Secret Postcard Sale is a model pinched from the Royal Academy of Arts, London.

"I felt it was the perfect opportunity for all sorts of creative types to get involved in; from the students of Bolton to famous artists from around the world.

"It works because everyone is creating a piece of art the same size and all have a common theme of conflict, but they can use any media they like."

She added: "I can’t believe how supportive everyone has been.

"We have artists, designers, and illustrators, from all over the world: France, Israel, Canada, and New York.

"I used social media sites to contact them, and asked if they would like to be involved.

"Unbelievably, most of them said yes.

"I couldn’t believe how supportive the professional artists have been, and obviously it’s great to have our very own creative Sir Ian on board.

"Let’s hope he come to the show."

Sir Ian's design will sit alongside postcards featuring the work of illustrator Chris Aaran; photographers Aziz and Cucher from New York and painter, Charlotte Caron from Paris.

And the work of young artists from Thornleigh, Essa Academy and Bolton School Boys’ Division will also on sale.

The exhibition will celebrate the work of art, music, drama and English pupils, and is taking place on Armed Forces Day, forming part of Bolton School's commemoration of the Great War.

Year nine pupil Dom Aly said: "It feels amazing to be given the opportunity to display our artwork alongside such notable figures.

"Being able to work with famous people like Ian McKellen feels crazy and just to be given the chance to work with these people is immensely exciting."

Classmate Luke James added: "I am very proud to have my work put on display alongside the work of well-known artists and celebrities and think of it as quite an honour."

The exhibition runs from 10am to 4pm at the Market Place this Saturday.
