YOUNGSTERS will return to a bigger new look school when they start back at Washacre Primary after their summer holidays.

The Westhoughton school has undergone a £750,000 transformation over the summer break to accommodate the extra pupils it has taken on.

Extra classrooms have been rebuilt and the school has been modernised including improving the heating system.

Bolton Council put up the money to expand the school after Washacre increased its intake from a 20-form entry school to 30 — and the extension is to ensure that the classrooms are fit for purpose for the growing school.

A council spokesman said: "A few years ago the school took on extra pupils in reception but their accommodation needed adjusting accordingly.

"With funding from our capital programme, we have enabled them to build two extra classrooms and carry out some internal remodelling in order to create a more appropriate environment for a growing school.”

As well as the development of two new classrooms, the school says all the open plan areas have been redesigned into enclosed classrooms, with additional study rooms.

Each classroom is equipped with its own sinks with reception also having its own toilets.

The school, in Clough Avenue, has been updating people of the progress of the build on its Facebook page, where it has posted videos of the work in progress.

The development marks the start of another chapter in the fortunes for the school, which was given a good rating by school inspectors at its last full Ofsted report after previously being marked as inadequate.

Washacre, which is smaller than average, had 148 children according to the most recent report.

The school has previously said the staff worked hard to turnaround the reputation of the school which has led to an increase in numbers.
