LETTERS terminating a cleaning contract at an under-threat nursery have been issued to staff — even though a decision is yet to be made on the future of the school.

The letters were sent out last week giving cleaning staff 12 weeks notice that their services at Susan Isaacs Nursery would no longer be required in December, even though a consultation over proposals to shut the facility is still taking place.

Bolton Council has now apologised for the error.

Susan Isaacs — a council-run nursery — is earmarked for closure with town hall and nursery bosses blaming financial pressures and falling numbers.

The controversial proposal is currently being consulted on with the council and the nursery previously stressing that no final decision would be made until views were considered.

The letters were quickly rescinded after unions — who are fighting the closure — made a complaint.

A spokesman for GMB said: “The letters were sent out saying the cleaning contract had been cancelled and gave cleaning staff 12 weeks notice.

“They have since received an apology saying the letters had been sent in error.

“We are being told it was a mistake by management.

“These letters can’t be issued while still in consultation.”

He added: “It is a horrible experience to receive those letters telling you that the contract would end at around Christmas.

“I was told that the nursery could close as early as December, and this fits in with that.

“I think it is disgraceful those letters were sent and were only rescinded because we got to know about it.

“The council says it is committed to transparency and then these letters are sent out.”

Unions are demanding answers as to why a the flagship nursery has been earmarked for closure.

GMB says it is still waiting for facts and figures, such as the financial situation the nursery is in, and how many children it needs to make it viable.

A consultation over the closure will take place and those wanting to take part should send their views to the council no later than October 23.

A council spokesman said: "These letters were sent in error and we apologise for any confusion caused.

"The council will be following the full consultation procedure for the proposed closure of Susan Isaacs nursery and we welcome any comments from staff or parents.

“A final report, taking into account people’s views, will then be considered by the council and the appropriate next steps taken.”
