IN Bolton there are so many great primary schools — and in those primary schools, there are so many great classes.

And to choose one of those outstanding classes proved difficult.

But last year's year six class at The Oaks, in Sharples, really is a shinning example of how amazing young people really are.

It was awarded Primary Class of the Year Award, sponsored by The Bolton News.

Their proud teacher Tom Hampson said that not only did they work "incredibly hard" they supported one another throughout the year to achieve both academically and develop into young citizens.

The class had two aspiring astronomers who took a GCSE in that year, a national wrestling champion, gymnast, a Manchester United academy player, a cheerleader who with her team came third in the country — and that is just a few examples of pupils' achievements in and out of class.

The class as a whole even recorded a radio show which was broadcast across Bolton on Bolton FM on Christmas Day last year.

And the young people don't just support each other, they share their learning with youngsters around the world and have supported charities through various fundraising events, supporting people locally and across the country.

Mr Hampson said: "The class as a whole have been hardworking and trustworthy leaders of our school throughout the year and The Oaks is definitely said to be losing them as they move to high school.

"Our loss is their gain and I'm sure they will all go on to flourish in their new schools."

Ethan Unsworth, aged 11, who now attends Canon Slade School in Bradshaw, accepted the award on behalf of his class.

He said: "Receiving the award is just phenomenal.

"We did so much in the class and I have many happy memories of the school."

His mum Rebecca, who is chair of governors at the school, added: "The Oaks is a fabulous school, the children are amazing and the staff are excellent, work very hard to give children opportunities fulfilling its motto ' learning for life'.

"It is a really special place."
