SECOND best is not good enough for staff and pupils at a Bolton primary school, which has been classed as “outstanding” by Ofsted inspectors.

Pikes Lane Primary School in Deane, was given the highest mark available to a school by inspectors.

The Ofsted report said: “The head teacher, senior leaders and governors exude ambition for the pupils of the school. Second best is not good enough.”

Despite pupils starting school with skills that are often well below those expected for their age, they make strong progress achieving results above the national average.

Youngsters described learning as “fun”, telling inspectors: “It has to be, that is how we focus”.

Inspectors stated: “Teachers have very high expectations of what every pupil can achieve.

“Classrooms are a hive of activity and burst with ambition.”

The report added: “Pupils have an exceptional understanding of the skills that they need to be outstanding learners. They have an excellent understanding of how their education equips them for the future.”

Head teacher Louise McArdle said: “We are absolutely delighted that Ofsted has recognised all our achievements as a school and awarded us an outstanding grading in every area.

“ At Pikes Lane we believe that, ‘together we can be the best’ and, all the staff, governors, children and parents have worked together as a team to achieve such an amazing result.

“We always ensure that we put the needs of each and every child at the heart of what we do and, while we are committed to ensuring the highest possible academic standards, we also place an equally strong emphasis on developing children’s confidence, resilience and strength of character through a wide range of curricular and extra-curricular activities and experiences.

“I’m really pleased that Ofsted praised us for this aspect of our work. I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to ensure that we are consistently delivering an outstanding quality of education for all children. A huge well done and thank you to everyone.”
