THE best of the Bolton school community have been given a chance to shine.

Behind classroom doors are thousands of teachers, pupils and staff working hard every day to bring top class education to the community.

And here we honour the achievements of those people and places that make up all that’s good in the borough’s schools at the second Bolton News School Awards.

Hayley Mathieson Fundraiser of the Year — Abbie Givens-Smethurst

THIS year we have introduced a new award in the memory of a special person who was a huge believer in the potential of young people – and undertook a number of fundraising challenges to support them.

The young people’s champion tragically died from a rare condition just months after marrying.

But such was her influence she continues to live in the hearts and minds of many, not least her family.

The first award in Hayley Mathieson’s memory was presented to Abbie Givens-Smethurst, who as well as working hard in school also thinks of others.

Louise Minion from Harper Green School put her forward.

She described Abbie as a “lovely girl who always works hard in school.

“Her behaviour and attendance is and always has been exemplary.

“She recently had all her beautiful long hair cut off so she could donate it to The Little Princess Trust.

“She has also raised money through sponsorship.”

Abbie, aged 16 from Farnworth, said: “To win the award is overwhelming!

“I wasn’t aware I’d been nominated , I was completely amazed when I found out.

“It is a real honour to be part of all this.”
