TEACHERS are "optimistic" about the future of a school which is in special measures.

School inspectors found that staff morale is high at UTC Bolton, which was classed as failing in April of last year.

Ofsted conducted its second monitoring visit after the school was judged inadequate.

Inspectors found that it is taking "effective action towards the removal of special measure".

The headteacher of UTC Bolton was singled out for praise in the Ofsted report.

Ofsted inspectors said: "The acting principal has been instrumental in nurturing a culture of honesty and respect in the college.

"He has developed a sense of teamwork among staff. Staff who spoke with inspectors said that they enjoy working at the college and are optimistic about the future. Staff morale is high. One teacher commented: ‘It’s a great working atmosphere. We really enjoy working here'."

Inspectors found the leaders are steering the school — which educates pupils an students aged 14-19-years-old — in "the right direction".

Parents who spoke to Ofsted said they would recommend the school to others, and were described as being enthusiastic about the support their children receive.

Students are said to benefit from a range of extra-curricular activities and took more pride in their work.

The inspectors said: "Teachers have good relationships with pupils. Pupils appreciate their teachers and are generally keen to do well.

"Most are interested in their learning. They listen well in lessons."

The young people were described as polite and respectful.

Children's learning in mathematics and science in Key Stage Four is improving, but, said inspectors, remains weak. But they observed "stronger teaching in English".

Persistent absence has decreased

Ofsted said the school was moving towards joining a multi-academy trust.

Acting principal Liam McDaid said: "UTC Bolton has made considerable progress since our first Ofsted inspection in February, 2017.

"The latest report identifies how pleased our parents are with the support that their children receive at UTC Bolton and that our students are motivated to achieve their fullest potential. I am delighted that the report highlighted how leaders, teachers and support staff are working together improve standards and build on effective action taken to date."
