Junk food — ‘we are old enough to choose’

SHOULD schools be able to clamp down on shops selling cheap, discounted junk food to pupils?

The pupils of George Tomlinson have their say: Zak Gough, aged 13, said: “Young people have a right to choose what they eat because we are old enough to make our own decisions, but maybe shops near primary schools should be targeted.

“If healthier food was cheaper than there would not be this problem.”

Sam Mitchell, aged 12, said: “They should put prices of junk food up because it is so cheap. If it was expensive then it would deter children from buying it.

“But we know what a balanced diet is.”

Megan Grindley, aged 12, said: “Yes in the case of primary schools because they need a push in the right direction, whereas we should be able to choose and we know that having a snack is not bad for you as long as you eat healthily.”

Hannah Hill, aged 13, said: “I don’t think so, because young people should have the freedom to choose and younger children today are given fruit to educate them about eating healthy and develop good habits.”
