CHUMBAWAMABA’S Boff Whalley will be in Bolton to headline a Love Music Hate Racism event.

He will be singing a number of songs at Bolton Socialist Club in an anti-hate crime evening in memory of Sophie Lancaster.

Sophie from Bacup, Lancashire, was just 20 when she was murdered because she was dressed as a goth.

This will be one of the biggest events staged by Bolton Love Music Hate Racism at the club in Wood Street, in the town centre.

Julia Simpkins secretary of Bolton’s Love Music Hate Racism said: “There will be representatives from the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, at the event.”

She said the event will take on extra poignancy in Bolton given recent events.

Ms Simpkins said: “We feel this Love Music Hate Racism event in Bolton is really important given the anti-mosque feeling and the protests.

“On the night we will have quite a few speakers and Bolton Clarion Choir. Children’s author Alan Gibbons will also be attending.”

The former Chumbawamba band member will perform some of his songs.

Mr Gibbons wrote about Sophie’s death in a novel entitled “Hate” which was released in March of this year and he will be speaking on behalf of the Sophie Lancaster Foundation.

Ms Simpkins added: “Bolton Love Music Hate Racism stage a number of events. I just send off emails to these big names saying we are just a small venue with no money and asking them if they could come and play — and they say yes.

“This will be a big event at which we have some really great guests attending.”

Money raised by the concert will fund a production on anti-racism put on by young people.

The event takes place on October 25 and tickets are £7 and £4 concessions, and can be bought on the door.
