TEENAGE singer Charlotte Shacklady was just four years old when her father suffered a stroke which left him severely disabled.

Needing round-the-clock care, the former Olympic wrestler went to live in a Leonard Cheshire Disability care home and now his daughter is taking part in an event to raise money for the charity.

The Tony Shacklady Memorial Concert will be held at Astley Bridge British Royal British Legion, Belmont Road, on Friday, October 24, starring 16-year-old Charlotte and other performers, including Bolton indie band Telling Twins Apart.

At the age of nine, she started having singing lessons with Astley Bridge-based vocal tutor Keith Bateson, who has helped organise the event.

She said: “I have very few memories of before the stroke, I don’t really remember all that much.

“I have a lot of memories of him in the home and I get told stuff by other people, my brother and my sister, about what he was like.

“The home was amazing with him. He was in hospital for 18 months and in a few homes before he went there.

“When he moved to Leonard Cheshire, they were all really good with him and gave so much support.”

Mr Shacklady wrestled in three Olympic Games — Mexico in 1968, Munich in 1972 and Montreal in 1976 — and won a silver medal at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand.

He was aged 56 when he suffered a cerebellar stroke in 2002, which left him in a wheelchair, unable to walk or feed himself, and he died from pneumonia in February.

As well as paying tribute to Mr Shacklady, the concert will also raise money for the care home in Rochdale where he lived for 12 years and there will be a CD of songs available to buy, recorded at Redbridge Studios in Breightmet.

Charlotte, who goes to Bury Grammar Sixth Form and lives in Worsley, said: “There will be all sorts of stuff, songs off the CD, we do a mix of jazz, pop, ‘60s stuff.

“I would like to be a singer, but the industry is really hard to get into, I’ve got other options if it doesn’t work out, but I would like to.”
