REAL ale lovers have begun their annual pilgrimage to the Bolton Beer Festival, which got under way last night.

Drinkers got the chance to sample up to 200 cask ales as the 21st festival kicked off at Bolton Rugby Union Club in Avenue Street.

Organisers have also promised lagers from all over the world and a big selection of ciders for the event, which runs until Saturday.

Wines, spirits and soft drinks are also on offer.

The festival was held in aid of Bolton Lads and Girls Club and has grown over the years since the days it was hosted by the landmark Howcroft pub.

Its former landlord, Clive Nightingale, relocated to Austria after selling the pub, but returns to Bolton every year to mastermind the event.

On Saturday, a free taxi shuttle is being laid on from the Sweet Green Tavern, near Bolton railway station, every half hour from 11.30am to ferry out-of-town drinkers to the venue. Meanwhile a programme of live entertainment has been organised.

Last night solo pianist and vocalist Andy Stones performed and tonight it is the turn of The Boat Band to take to the stage.

Jerome McMurray and Friends play on Friday and big band The Managers will set the event alight on Saturday.
