THERE was plenty of festive cheer in Kearsley as the town switched on its Christmas tree's lights.

The switch-on took place at Kearsley Mount Methodist Church in Manchester Road and was attended by about 200 people.

There was live music from Kearsley Youth Brass Band, while various groups from the local community also attended the event, including the Kearsley Mount brownies and rainbows and children from St Stephens Primary School choir.

Prior to this year's festive event, Kearsley had not had its own Christmas tree for five years.

Stephen Tonge, who organised the event, said: "It went extremely well. I was really surprised with the turnout, but at this time of the year there's a feel good factor.

"There was lots of intergenerational interaction - we've got people in their 60's in the brass band as well as young children. Nights like this create a great community spirit in Kearsley."
