COMEDIAN Dave Spikey showed he was anything but Pointless as he won £1,500 for Bolton charity Paws for Kids.

The funnyman, from Farnworth, joined fellow comic Hal Cruttenden for a celebrity special of the BBC One quiz show Pointless on Saturday to win £3,000 cash to share between their chosen causes.

Dave's charity Paws for Kids, based in Palace Street, Bolton, helps women, children and their pets escape from a life of violence and abuse to a better and caring future.

The comedy pair won the final round of the show by correctly saying that Greig was a composer featured at the BBC Proms in 2014 — an answer that none of the 100 people surveyed before the show had guessed.

As the show aired, a jubilant Dave, who is appearing in the live Phoenix Nights shows with Peter Kay next year, re-tweeted a number of messages from fans on Twitter, before posting: "Apologies for self indulgent RTs of all kind comments after Pointless last night. Only excuses 1) Thrilled with result 2) Very very drunkard."

Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman presented the special celebrity comedians edition of the quiz, which also featured Allistair McGowan's Big Impression stars Ronni Ancona and Alistair McGowan, Peep Show star Robert Webb, Richard Herring, one half of comedy double-act Lee and Herring, and comedians Milton Jones and Roisin Conaty.

A spokesman for Paws for Kids posted on Facebook after Dave's win: "Thanks to Dave the money will make a massive difference to Paws for Kids."

Dave's love of animals has been well documented over the years, and in 2008 he won the James Newton Memorial Award from the RSPCA for his efforts on behalf of animals.

He is also a patron for Bradshaw-based Pet Rehome, which finds caring new owners for unwanted animals, and he is a campaigner against the torture of Asiatic "moon" bears.
