BUDDING baton twirlers are preparing for their first major competition this weekend.

Youngsters from the Bolton Majorettes will be taking part in the Bolton Area Baton Twirling competition and success could lead them to competing on a regional level.

If any of the young twirlers place in the top seven on Sunday, they will be invited to represent the North West in competition later this year.

Troupe coach, Rachael Bailey, said: “I’m immensely proud of all the dancers for doing do well and wish them all the best for Sunday.”

The troupe will be heading into the competition in high spirits after two of their number were selected to represent England in July’s European Cup.

Katie Jackson, aged 21, and Sophie Jackson, aged 15, did enough over the past year to impress the England coaches and win call ups for the completion, which taking place in Slovenia.

Speaking about the call ups, Ms Bailey said: “I started the group in 1998 as a bit of a community fun thing, and in the 16 years since it’s been great to see the development. The call ups are great news and the group’s best achievement so far.

“Both Katie and Sophie have worked so hard and they really deserve it.”
