A CAFE and market are not the usual places you would expect to see a comedy gig.

But comedian Smug Roberts is planning to hold a whirlwind tour of 20 gigs in 24 hours — including appearances at Bolton Market and town centre cafe Odessa.

The funny man, from Mrs Brown’s Boys and Phoenix Nights, is doing the 20 minute shows to raise money for Comic Relief on Saturday, February 28.

He is now looking for other places — including hospitals, fire stations, churches, mosques, synagogues, retirement homes and businesses across the North West — to be host venues but is particularly keen to appear at a wedding, someone's party or house.

Any individual or organisation with people in need of cheering up can apply in return for a donation to Comic Relief.

He said: “We want to bring a smile to the faces of deserving folk whilst raising money for Comic Relief.

"I’d like to say a big thanks to DX Haulage company for providing the transport for the tour and thanks in advance to anybody that donates to Comic Relief and helps us on our 24 hours of madness.”

Alex McVey, owner of Odessa in Exchange Street, said: "It's a bit off-the-cuff really.

"We don't know how it's going to work.

"He may be outside or inside, going round the tables. If there's a queue, he might be entertaining people while they wait.

"It's for Comic Relief, it seemed a great idea — why not?

"I'm sure it won't faze him, after having done it for so long.

"It will be good, raising money and making people laugh."

The tour’s 20 theme celebrates the fact it will be the 20th anniversary of the launch of Mr Roberts' comedy career on February 28, 1995, which began when Caroline Aherne talent spotted him at the Frog and Bucket comedy club in Manchester.

Red Nose Day takes place on Friday, March 13, with a night of programmes on the BBC featuring comedy and entertainment to inspire the nation to make donations to help people home and abroad.
