BOLTON is ready to rock at a big free music festival in Queens Park later this year.

Thousands of music fans are expected to flock to Boltfest to see some of the country's top rock, indie and metal tribute bands at the park on the Bank Holiday weekend of Saturday, May 23, and Sunday, May 24.

The proposed music event is the brainchild of Jools Taylor, the man behind three successful Festwich festivals in Prestwich, featuring bands paying tribute to the likes of AC/DC, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Iron Maiden, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Guns ‘N’ Roses, Blur, Kasabian and Kaiser Chiefs.

The full line-up has not yet been announced.

Mr Taylor said: “We have a fantastic line-up planned for Bolton and details will be launched soon.

"We are also encouraging local bands in Bolton to get in touch with us."

Tickets for Boltfest will be free, subject to a small booking fee, and about 5,000 people are expected to attend each day.

Mr Taylor, who worked for Ministry of Sound putting on their shows across the world, said: "Every effort will be made to minimise disruption in the run up to the event and the activities on the day.

"We will be consulting with local businesses and residents to make this go as smoothly as possible.

"Our experience gained at organising other big events, such as Festwich, will help make this one a great success.

"It’s all about offering something for all ages and tastes, with a huge variety of music and activities and entertainment for all the kids and family.

"Subject to the proposals gaining approval, the official line-up and the ticket release date will be announced soon."

Boltfest, which will start at noon and finish at 10pm, will play host to two stages, beer tents, a VIP area, food stalls, a market area and children’s activities.

The festival is subject to gaining licence approval from the council, following consultation with local residents and businesses.

A series of drop-in meetings are being scheduled to discuss the plans and organisers, UK Tribute Festivals, say they will make contact with anyone who may be affected.

Cllr John Byrne, Bolton Council's cabinet member for culture, said: “We are delighted that the organisers are bringing this new festival to Bolton.

"We hope that their event gives families and young people the opportunity to enjoy some music, fun and street food.”

Festwich, held in St Mary’s Park, attracts more than 7,000 people each day, from as far afield as Glasgow and Brighton, and will take place on July 25 and 26.

Boltfest tickets will be available at a number of outlets across Bolton, to be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

Alternatively, they can be ordered online and details will be available on the festival's website nearer the time. Email info@boltfest.com.
