FORGET the red room – Wanderers midfielder Barry Bannan found himself red-faced when a midweek cinema trip went wrong.

The Scotland international, on loan from Crystal Palace, unknowingly made himself an internet hit last week after tweeting he had gone to see saucy blockbuster Fifty Shades of Grey on his own.

Trying to fill some downtime after being given the afternoon off training, Bannan had gone to the cinema hoping to watch a different film but ended up taking in the controversial adaptation of EL James’s racy novel – which has now taken more than £30 million at the UK box office.

“50 shades of grey on my own in Bolton, that's how bored I am today,” the 25-year-old tweeted, later adding: “Surrounded by old women in this film making me feel very uncomfortable.”

By the time the end credits were rolling, Bannan’s tweet had exploded on the internet.

Such was the furore, his manager at Palace, Alan Pardew, was even asked at his weekly press conference if he was worried about the player’s apparent boredom in the north west.

Thankfully, the former Newcastle United boss saw the funny side.

“I am not in any doubt about his mental state,” he laughed. “He’s a very, very stable young man.

“Hopefully he’s not getting involved in any of that sort of action.”

While most saw Bannan’s tweet as a harmless bit of fun, the former Aston Villa star did look to clarify his story to The Bolton News this week.

“I actually did go on my own but honestly, there’s a story behind it,” he insisted.

“I went to the cinema thinking another film was starting but got to the screen and I’d missed the start.

“Fifty Shades was the only thing that was on at the time – it was an honest mistake, really!”
