A BOLTON campaigner has blasted columnist Katie Hopkins' tweets about single mothers.

Gemma Aitchinson, the founder of YES Matters and sister of murdered teenage student Sasha Marsden, said the Celebrity Big Brother star is "not qualified" to comment on matters that do not affect her.

Katie's tweets were sent on Tuesday to her 500,000 followers and included "Full-time mummy is another word for unemployed" and "Full time mummy — so many difficult decisions to make — Costa or Starbucks, Jeremy Kyle or Cash in the Attic."

The tweets came days after Miss Aitchinson's campaign group, which aims to tackle sexual objectification and gender stereotyping, published an advert in The Bolton News in support of single mums in the run up to International Women's Day.

Miss Aitchinson, who is a single mother herself, said: "Is she really qualified to comment? She's well off, middle class, straight, white and has a husband, so she doesn't know anything about being a single mother.

"She doesn't know what she's talking about. She's just a token woman that agrees with the boys.

"She is not qualified to talk about the lives of single mums living of benefits."

YES Matters published the advert last Friday as a job description for the position of a "single mother" to celebrate single mums ahead of International Women's Day and to urge people not to label them as scroungers or lazy.

Miss Aitchinson, who lives in Westhoughton, said: "Single parents are always looked down upon even though they have been the ones to stay around and take responsibility for their child.

"We posted the advert because single mums have the hardest and most under appreciated job of all, and comments from the likes of Ms Hopkins do not help the plight of women who are working hard to bring up a child or children with little help from the government."

YES Matters is inviting people to its #Enough march on April 15.
