TALENTED young directors will be given the opportunity to develop their skills at the Octagon Theatre.

The Bolton theatre is one of eight theatre companies across the UK chosen to work with the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme (RTYDS).

The scheme, which has been running for more than 50 years, has placed new talent in major theatres around the country, giving them the opportunity to develop skills as directors and artistic leaders.

Young directors will have the opportunity to learn what it takes to run a company and direct plays at the Octagon.

Those selected for the scheme will work across all areas of the artistic programme: learning and participation, writer development, supporting the new digital strategy and engaging artists.

Speaking of the Octagon’s involvement, artistic director Elizabeth Newman said: “We are thrilled that we're going to host a resident assistant director through the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme.

"I came to the Octagon on this scheme after running two very different companies in London.

"Designed for people who are already creative trailblazers, but are eager to learn about regional theatre, it was an important moment in my development as an artist and arts leader.

"The experience enables people to really get to grips with how to lead a regional theatre, and I'm looking forward to the selection process and the opportunity to meet lots of exciting and passionate directors from all over the country.”

RTYDS is also working with theatres in Birmingham, Newcastle, Northampton, Salisbury, Leicester, Derby, Liverpool, Bristol and Coventry.

To apply, go to www.rtyds.co.uk, following the link "RTYDS for Directors".

The application deadline is June 8.

Directors applying for the scheme should have no less than 18 months' professional experience, with a demonstrable commitment to a professional career as a director, and a particular interest in regional theatre and developing audiences.

Successful applicants will be paid to work with one of England’s leading middle-scale producing theatre companies, and resident directors are also offered a production at the theatre in which they work.
