BOLTON writer Matt Cain has brought a hint of his hometown into his latest novel.

Nothing But Trouble, which he describes as a "glamorous sexy thriller" is a far cry from his debut offering Shot Through the Heart, a romantic comedy.

In the new offering the 38-year-old has named the two leading men after his beloved young nephews.

Mr Cain, who grew up in Bradshaw, also drew upon his local roots by making one of his main characters a Wiganer.

He said: "I haven't set any scenes in Bolton yet because I feel that people would read it autobiographically which I am not ready to do yet.

"But the character Harvey Sparks, the pop star's manager, is from Wigan so I'm getting close.

"He's named after my three-year-old nephew who lives in Bradshaw, and the romantic hero in it is named after seven-year-old Freddy who lives in Greenmount in Bury.

"The story is a glamorous sexy thriller so quite different from the last, which was more of a romantic comedy.

"In Nothing but Trouble the story follows the rock and roll lifestyle of a pop star and how she becomes in danger of it crashing down on her. It was really exciting to write."

Born in Walshaw, Bury, Mr Cain moved to Bradshaw aged two where he attended St Columbas RC Primary School in Tonge Moor Road.

He stayed in the borough until he went to university to embark on a career in broadcasting, where he was later picked to be Channel 4's first culture editor, before becoming a full-time writer two years ago.

Mr Cain said: "Writing is the one thing I've done that I am most proud of. I loved writing the book.

"I started it just as I had left Channel 4 so I was able to dedicate all my time to it.

"I was the arts and entertainment reporter at Channel 4 and my novels are all set in that world.

"This story is very different to the last though. This one is set in London and is about the music business whereas the last was set in LA.

"This book is darker and grittier. I think my dad was quite surprised at how racy it is. The first book was dedicated to my 93-year-old nan in Ainsworth and she keeps asking about when she can read this one but I don't know whether it might shock her a little bit!"

His novel Nothing But Trouble is out on July 16.
